European Athletics
Live Scoring Engine
European Athletics is the official governing body for the sport of athletics across Europe.
EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
OVERVIEW
•
Challenges
European Athletics needed a reliable, scalable, and vendor-agnostic scoring system that could handle:
- Real-time data from multiple timing and scoring providers
- Tens of thousands of concurrent users during peak event hours
- Seamless data delivery to multiple destinations: websites, apps, and broadcast feeds
- Continuous uptime and data accuracy across multi-day competitions
The goal was to create a stable, reliable, and real-time scoring solution, without compromising performance or flexibility, and capable of supporting the growth of athletics through consistent performance and flexibility across all European Athletics events.
Solutions
TEC designed and built a modern, cloud-native scoring engine powered by Microsoft Azure.
Built for performance and reliability:
- Azure Functions and Redis Cache ensure real-time data processing with sub-2-second refresh times
- Azure Service Bus and Storage Accounts provide distributed backups and persistent reliability, guaranteeing no data loss even under heavy load
- The platform was engineered for high concurrency, supporting over 10,000 simultaneous users without degradation
Built for flexibility:
- Supports multiple data providers (e.g., Swiss Timing, Seltec, On-Line Systems) through standardized ingestion formats
- Uses a microservices architecture, isolating each data stream so new integrations can be added or updated independently
- Provider-agnostic by design, ensuring European Athletics retains freedom of choice and control over its data ecosystem
Built for speed and scalability:
- Fully cloud-based, capable of spinning up additional compute resources automatically as audience demand increases
- Continuous monitoring ensures stability during large competitions such as the European Athletics Championships Rome 2024 and Apeldoorn 2025

Architecture & Flexibility
/ A
Unified Data Flow
At the core of the platform is a powerful data pipeline that ingests, validates, and distributes results in real time.
Live data from multiple timing and scoring providers is processed instantly, enriched, and made available across all digital touchpoints.
/ B
Scalable by Design
Built on a microservices-based architecture, each data source and function operates independently, allowing the system to scale effortlessly during peak usage.
Whether it’s a local meeting or a continental championship, performance remains consistent and uptime uninterrupted.
/ C
White-Label Flexibility
The platform is built once but adaptable for every competition.
Events can be launched quickly with no redevelopment required, offering full configuration of structure, menus, and components to suit different event formats.
/ D
Customisable Look and Feel
Therefore, we embraced a cloud-only strategy, utilizing SaaS solutions with an emphasis on and platform-agnostic development.
Utilizing Directus for CMS, the project will continue on its cloud infrastructure, supported by a React framework for the front-end, employing a combination of SSG and SSR.
The technical infrastructure is designed to be resilient, with full back-end and front-end deployment chains across Development, Staging, and Production environments, ensuring faultless core operations and high performance.
