Motorsport is about speed, precision, and courage, but above all, it is about resilience. In the Beyond Limits series, we continue to share the stories of Romanian athletes who have pushed beyond known boundaries to reach the highest level of performance.
This time, our guest is Norbert Maior, one of the most accomplished rally drivers of Romania’s younger generation, a representative of Napoca Rally Academy, European Junior Champion, and World Vice-Champion.
Together with his sister and co-driver, Francesca Maior, Norbert has proven that international success is achievable even in a sport considered extremely challenging and costly, when ambition, perseverance, and well-timed decisions align.
Norbert Maior spoke openly about his journey, the challenges that shaped him, and the lessons that led him toward international performance. Below, you can discover his perspective in detail.
The Story of a Champion
How did you experience the transition from national championships to European and World competitions?
“It was a very difficult transition. It was like a wake-up call, because when we started competing in the European Championship, we came from the position of being, let’s say, the fastest and most promising juniors in Romania. We thought we knew how to drive fast, but that wasn’t the case, because once we got there, we realized our experience was quite limited.
To help people understand, international experience is extremely important in our sport. What does experience mean? It means seeing new stages, driving on routes you don’t know, compared to Romania, where you’re familiar with the stages and road configurations. When we arrived there, it felt like asking ourselves: where do we even start? I felt like a beginner. It took time to realize this and to accept that we weren’t where we needed to be.
I believe that in every athlete’s life, it’s important to be aware of each moment and to act accordingly when necessary. If we had stayed in the national championship, we probably would have been satisfied with what we already knew. We thought we were good, and we likely wouldn’t have achieved the results that came later.
So yes, it was difficult, but I think it was the best decision we could have made at that time, in 2019. Then in 2020, we truly began our European Championship journey the right way.”
What did becoming World Vice-Champion mean to you?
“These were two very important years for us: 2023 and 2024.Thinking about it, the European Championship title is actually more important to me than the World Vice-Champion title, mainly because it was my first major title.
The 2023 title came after a three-year cycle in the European Championship, and I believe it was the most important and hardest-earned title. The 2024 World Vice-Champion title meant a lot, but it was only possible because of what we achieved in 2023.
To explain it better, in 2023 we won a scholarship. As European Junior Champions, we earned a place in the Junior World Championship. So that European title became our launchpad, and then we had to adapt to the World Championship.
Once again, we almost started from zero. We went to the first round with a completely new car. We didn’t have extensive preparation, because in our sport, preparation means financial support; it means budget. Every test session is very expensive. In 2024, we couldn’t do much testing, so we had to adapt to every single round.
We started in Sweden on snow, then Croatia on asphalt, followed by gravel events. We managed to achieve good results and only won the final round. We were consistently there, and that’s why we became World Vice-Champions. But at the beginning, it was very difficult for us in the World Championship as well.
We finished the season with a victory in Greece. That was probably the most important moment of 2024, because we scored crucial points there and secured the World Vice-Champion title — once again, two huge achievements for us.
These are two results we dreamed about for a long time, and we hope they will matter going forward and represent a strong start at senior level. It’s also worth mentioning that I’m still 27 years old and technically still a junior, but I’ve moved on. I won’t be competing in junior championships anymore.”
How do you manage to stay calm and focused under maximum pressure?
“It’s not necessarily easy. I don’t know if I have a specific formula for it, but I’ve realized that I function better under pressure. I can focus more. Of course, like in any sport — maybe even more so in ours — negative thoughts can show up.
I always try to get rid of them, because compared to other sports, a mistake in ours costs much more in several ways: financially, and it’s also a dangerous sport.
That’s why the mental side is extremely important. We try, or at least I try, to keep it under control at all times, think positively, and focus only on the objective and what we aim to achieve at each event. So far, with minor deviations, we’ve managed to do that.”
Have you ever had moments when you felt you couldn’t continue?
“Many times. Many times, I thought that maybe it would be better to stop, or that maybe I wasn’t good enough. Those kinds of thoughts come up. I’ve been doing this for 11 years — this is my 11th season of rallying. But whenever a thought like that appears, I try to think about the good moments, because those moments have always been priceless.
You don’t achieve a major result every day. And for me, maybe I also set my goals quite high, so that I can truly enjoy it when it finally happens. I have a special photo on my desktop. It’s from when I won the title in 2023. I see it every day, and that motivates me.”
The Impact of Technology in Motorsport
If you had access to today’s technology in your early years, do you think it would have accelerated your development?
“No, I don’t think so. I believe it’s important in our sport to learn the fundamentals and not focus too much on engineering, car data, and all that. It’s important to grow as a driver, as an athlete, as a person. Those are the most important aspects, in my view. Technology can help you a lot, but often it’s good to focus on yourself as well.”
Norbert's Advice for the Next Generation
What would you tell young drivers who dream of competing in European or World Championships?
“I don’t know if there’s a specific formula. I had a lot of ambition, and I think that’s a very important message: to truly want it. Perseverance is also a key factor, along with the decisions you make in critical moments.
It’s a very expensive sport. I started rallying at 16. I had support from my parents up to a certain point during my karting years, but they didn’t have the financial means to support rally budgets, so I tried to find sponsors. What matters is identifying opportunities and insisting on pursuing your dream.
Together with Francesca, we’ve proven that it’s possible. You don’t necessarily need to have money from home. I believe it’s possible. I believe it’s possible in Romania too. And we’re not the only example. There are many others who have proven that it can be done.”

Norbert a demonstrat, alături de sora sa, Francesca Maior, care îi este și copilot, că performanța internațională poate fi atinsă chiar și într-un sport considerat extrem de dificil și costisitor, atunci când ambiția, perseverența și deciziile inspirate se aliniază la momentul potrivit.

Povestea unui Campion
Cum ai trăit trecerea de la campionatele naționale la cele europene și mondiale?
„A fost o trecere super grea. A fost ca un wake-up call să zic, pentru că noi când am început în campionatul european, veneam din postura de, să zicem cei mai rapizi, cei mai promițători juniori din România. Credeam că știm să mergem cu mașina tare, dar nu a fost așa, pentru că ne-am trezit acolo cu o experiență destul de redusă.
Ca să înțeleagă lumea, în sportul nostru e foarte importantă experiența la nivel internațional. Ce înseamnă experiență? Înseamnă că vezi probe noi, rulezi pe niște trasee pe care nu le cunoști, versus România, unde ești obișnuit cu traseele și cu configurația drumurilor de aici. Și am ajuns acolo, era ca și cum: cum începem? M-am simțit ca un debutant. Și a fost greu până să realizăm asta și până când ne-am dat seama că nu suntem unde trebuie.
Cred că în viața fiecărui sportiv e important să conștientizeze fiecare moment și să acționeze în cunoștință de cauză atunci când este nevoie, pentru că noi dacă am fi rămas în campionatul național, probabil că ne mulțumeam cu ce știm. Credeam că suntem buni și probabil că nu am fi ajuns să atingem niște rezultate mai târziu.
Deci a fost greu, dar a fost cred că, cel mai bun lucru pe care îl puteam face atunci în 2019, dar în 2020 să zicem că am început în campionatul european așa cum trebuie.”
Ce a însemnat pentru tine să devii vicecampion mondial?
„Au fost doi ani foarte importanți pentru noi și aici mă refer la 2023 și 2024. Dacă stau să mă gândesc, este mai important titlul de campion european decât titlul de vicecampion mondial, pentru că, în primul rând, a fost primul titlu important pentru mine.
În 2023 a fost după un ciclu de 3 ani începuți în campionatul european și acela cred că a fost cel mai important și cel mai muncit titlu. Titlul din 2024 de vicecampion mondial a însemnat mult, dar a fost posibil datorită faptului că am câștigat în 2023. Ca să înțelegem mai bine, noi în 2023 am câștigat o bursă. Fiind campioni europeni de juniori, am câștigat participarea în campionatul mondial de juniori. Deci cumva a fost rampa de lansare atunci, câștigând campionatul european, și a trebuit să ne adaptăm în campionatul mondial.
Din nou, am luat-o aproape de la zero. Am mers la prima etapă cu o mașină complet nouă. N-am avut extraordinar de multă pregătire, pentru că în sportul nostru, pregătire înseamnă suport financiar, înseamnă buget. Fiecare sesiune de teste are un cost mare. Noi n-am putut în 2024 să facem foarte mult, și atunci a trebuit să ne adaptăm la fiecare etapă.
Am început în Suedia pe zăpadă, în Croația pe asfalt, după care pe macadam. Am reușit să facem un rezultat bun și să câștigăm doar ultima etapă. Am fost acolo tot timpul, de aceea am și ieșit vicecampioni mondiali. Am fost acolo, dar la început ne-a fost foarte greu și în campionatul mondial.
Am încheiat cu o victorie în Grecia. A fost să zicem cel mai important moment din 2024, pentru că am obținut puncte importante acolo și am reușit să bifăm titlul de vicecampioni mondiali, ceea ce pentru noi, din nou, sunt două rezultate imense.
Sunt două rezultate la care am visat foarte mult, și sperăm să conteze asta și să fie un început bun la seniori. E de menționat și asta, eu încă am 27 de ani, încă sunt junior, dar am trecut să zicem. Nu o să mai merg la campionatele de juniori.”
Cum reușești să rămâi calm și lucid în momentele de presiune maximă?
„Nu e neapărat ușor. Nu știu dacă am o rețetă pentru asta, dar am realizat că funcționez mai bine atunci când este presiune. Mă pot focusa mai mult atunci, dar evident, ca în orice sport, poate la noi și un pic mai accentuat, intervin și niște gânduri negative.
Eu tot timpul încerc să scap de ele, pentru că, comparând cu alte sporturi, la noi o greșeală costă mult mai mult, din mai multe puncte de vedere: costă financiar, este un sport periculos.
Și atunci, partea mentală este extrem de importantă. Încercăm, sau cel puțin încerc să o țin sub control mereu și să gândesc pozitiv, și să încerc să fiu cu ochii doar înspre obiectiv și doar înspre ceea ce ne propunem la fiecare etapă. Și până acum, cu mici abateri, am reușit să facem asta.”
Ai avut momente în care ai simțit că nu mai poți continua?
„De multe ori. De multe ori m-am gândit că poate ar fi bine să mă opresc sau poate că nu sunt destul de bun. Vin genul ăsta de gânduri. Eu fac asta de 11 ani, acesta este al 11-lea sezon în raliuri. Dar tot timpul când îmi vine un gând de genul ăsta încerc să mă gândesc la momentele bune, pentru că momentele bune au fost tot timpul de neprețuit.
Un rezultat mare nu îl obții în fiecare zi. Și pentru mine, poate că îmi și setez obiectivele destul de înalte, astfel încât să mă bucur cu adevărat atunci când se întâmplă. Pe desktop am o poză specială. E o poză de când am câștigat titlul în 2023. O văd în fiecare zi și asta mă motivează.”
Impactul Tehnologiei în Motorsport
Dacă ai fi avut acces la tehnologia actuală în primii tăi ani de pilotaj, crezi că ți-ar fi accelerat evoluția?
„Nu, nu cred. Nu cred, pentru că mi se pare important în sportul nostru să înveți lucrurile de bază, să nu te focusezi foarte mult pe partea asta de inginerie, de date ale mașinii și așa mai departe. E important să crești tu ca pilot, ca sportiv, ca om. Astea sunt cele mai importante aspecte din punctul meu de vedere. Te poți ajuta mult de tehnologie, dar de multe ori e bine să te gândești și la tine.”
Sfaturi pentru Generația Următoare
Ce ai transmite tinerilor piloți care visează să ajungă în campionatele europene sau mondiale?
„Nu știu dacă e neapărat o rețetă. Eu am avut foarte multă ambiție și asta cred că e un mesaj foarte important: să îți dorești cu adevărat. Perseverența cred că e un punct important, și niște decizii pe care le iei în niște momente critice.
Este un sport destul de scump. Eu am început în raliuri de la 16 ani. Am avut susținere de la părinții mei până într-un punct, în perioada kartingului, dar nu aveau posibilități mari cât să mă susțină financiar și cu bugetele din raliuri, așa că am încercat să găsesc sponsori. Important e să identifici niște posibilități și să insiști pentru visul tău.
Eu împreună cu Francesca am demonstrat că se poate. Nu este necesar să ai banii de acasă. Cred că se poate. Și în România cred că se poate. Și avem exemple, nu doar noi. Avem exemple destul de multe care au dovedit că se poate.”
Drumul lui Norbert Maior demonstrează că în motorsport, ca și în viață, performanța se construiește prin ambiție, disciplină și curajul de a merge mereu mai departe. Parcursul său devine astfel o referință pentru tinerii care aspiră la performanță internațională și transmite un mesaj clar: limitele există doar până când ai curajul să le depășești.
